- Run 200 total miles. This goal was abandoned in late January / early February after it became clear that I had contracted plantar fasciitis. I made it to 42.5 miles before crapping out; and I don't plan on doing any running for the next few months, though I have been playing volleyball and spikeball here and there. I'm getting better, albeit slowly.
- Have 40 weightlifting gym sessions. I actually went 39 times, which I consider a greater success than if I had pushed it to 40. One of my learnings from this process was that it's very important to give your muscles adequate time to rest before attempting the same strength training exercise, if you expect any improvement. That's why 3 times per week X 13 weeks = 39 gym sessions turned out to be ideal. And I'm very pleased with my progress:
- Bench Press: 175lb x 6 --> 195lb x 7
- Weighted Chin-ups: Bodyweight+30lbs x 8 --> Bodyweight+40lbs x 8
- Squats: 225lb x 8 --> 235lb x 6 (I didn't do these very much, which is something I'll need to correct)
- Deadlifts: 255lb x 7 --> 305lb x 7 (This is what I was doing instead of squatting :) )
- Weight: 197.8lb --> ~199lb, mostly due to the fact that I started taking creatine monohydrate
- Read 8 books cover-to-cover. I read 8, although I abandoned one out of boredom. They were:
- A Clash of Kings, by George R. R. Martin
- A Storm of Swords, by George R. R. Martin (abandoned 2/3s through... just couldn't get into this one. May try again.)
- Born to Run, by Christopher McDougall
- Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, by Chuck Klosterman
- Venture Deals, by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson
- Tales of the City, by Armistaud Maupin
- More Tales of the City, by Armistaud Maupin
- Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
I'm very interested in performing type of goal-setting again. The trouble is, I'll be out of town on two extended trips: From April 10-24, and from May 23-June 6. That only leaves six weeks in San Francisco out of the Q2 time period, which will impact my weightlifting goals (though not my reading goals). Still, I will set some goals anyway. Without further ado:
- Have 17 weightlifting gym sessions. Six weeks x 3 per week yields 18 trips to the gym, minus one just because I think it's more like 5.7 weeks than six.
- Read 13 books cover-to-cover. Last quarter's goal was not ambitious enough, as evidenced by the 5 books that I read in March alone once I realized how lazy I had been. Let's go for one per week this time. I'll have a lot of free time.
- A third goal to be determined later. I'm going to ponder on this for the next week.
Thanks for reading.
Patrick
